Two very different tools for two very different jobs
Semrush and RunOctopus show up in the same research thread because both promise to help your store show up in search. But past that, they solve different problems. Comparing them is a bit like comparing a research library and a set of surveying instruments to a construction crew. One gives you the data and the drafting tools to work with yourself. The other plans the blueprint, builds the structure, and moves the furniture in.
Semrush is a broad SEO and marketing intelligence suite. Store owners, agencies, and in-house marketers use it for keyword research, rank tracking, technical site audits, backlink analysis, and competitor traffic estimates. Its Content Toolkit, formerly branded ContentShake AI, adds AI-assisted drafting for individual articles on top of that data. It's one of the most established platforms in the SEO industry, and its data is genuinely deep. Read our full origin story on the About page for how we came to build the ecommerce-specific alternative.
RunOctopus (powered by Ollie) is a content engine built specifically for ecommerce stores. Ollie doesn't hand you a keyword report and a blank draft to fill in yourself. He plans the strategy, writes the guides and interactive tools, interlinks everything with your product pages, and installs it directly on your store. You don't run reports or manage a dashboard of separate tools. Ollie runs the whole engine.
Semrush gives you the data and the tools to research, track, and draft your own content. Ollie is a content engine you don't have to operate: point it at your store and it plans the strategy, writes the pages, links them together, and installs the finished result.

What Semrush does well
Semrush has earned its position as one of the most widely used SEO platforms on the market. Give credit where it's due:
- Keyword research depth. The Keyword Magic Tool draws on one of the largest keyword databases in the industry, with search volume, difficulty, and intent data across dozens of markets. If you want a lightweight starting point before committing to a subscription, our own keyword idea generator covers the basics, but Semrush's database goes considerably deeper.
- Rank tracking. Position Tracking monitors rankings daily across desktop, mobile, and local results. This is genuinely Semrush's strongest ground, and it's something Ollie doesn't attempt to do.
- Site audits and technical SEO. The Site Audit tool crawls your store, flags crawl errors, broken links, duplicate content, and Core Web Vitals issues you'd otherwise catch late.
- Competitor and backlink analysis. Domain Overview and the backlink gap tool let you see where competitor stores get their links and traffic from, which is useful intelligence no matter who writes your content.
- Content Toolkit for drafting. The SEO Content Template and AI Writer give a structured starting draft graded against the pages currently ranking for a target keyword. If you have a human writer who wants a data-backed head start rather than a blank page, this is a real time-saver.
What Ollie does differently
Ollie isn't trying to out-Semrush Semrush at keyword data or rank tracking. It's solving a different problem: building the actual ecommerce content that Google and AI search reward, without you having to operate a suite of research and drafting tools yourself.
- No dashboards to operate. With Semrush, you still have to interpret the keyword reports, choose your targets, write or edit the drafts, and set up the internal linking. Ollie decides what to build and does the writing and linking itself.
- Content architecture, not a single draft. Ollie doesn't produce one graded article. He builds a structured web of interlinked pillar guides, buyer paths, and tools mapped to what your niche actually needs for topical authority, not just one keyword at a time.
- Volume that builds authority. Publishing 50-200+ pages of interconnected content is what moves the needle for SEO. Ollie builds the launch foundation in 48 hours and publishes every month after, so the library compounds without you drafting or approving each piece one at a time.
- Interactive tools included. Calculators, product finders, quizzes. These are engagement drivers the Content Toolkit can't produce because they require code, not just graded text.
- Direct Shopify integration. Ollie installs content directly on your store. No exporting a draft out of a content dashboard and formatting it for your CMS.
Who should choose Semrush
Semrush is the better choice if:
- You need deep keyword research across a large keyword set, with search volume and difficulty data by market
- You want daily rank tracking across desktop, mobile, and local search results
- You run technical SEO audits and backlink monitoring at scale, possibly across many client sites
- You already have an in-house writer or strategist and just want a data-backed starting draft, not a finished, published page
- Your business isn't exclusively ecommerce. Semrush works across SaaS, agencies, local businesses, and more
Who should choose Ollie
Ollie is the better choice if:
- You run an ecommerce store and want organic traffic from Google and AI search without operating a research suite yourself
- You don't have an SEO team. You want the strategy done for you, not just a graded draft to edit
- You need volume, 50-200+ pages of interconnected content, not one article at a time
- You want interactive tools (calculators, quizzes, product finders) alongside your guides
- You want content installed on your store automatically, see our content engine guide for how that build actually works
- You care about topical authority as a complete architecture, not a single page scored against one competitor
Can you use both?
Yes, and for stores already serious about SEO, this is probably the smartest combination. Semrush's Position Tracking and Site Audit tools are worth running alongside anything you publish. They tell you what's actually happening in the search results regardless of who or what wrote the content that got you there.
Use Semrush for research and monitoring. Keyword data, competitor gaps, technical site health, and rank tracking. Use Ollie to build the actual content those reports say you need, the guides, buyer paths, and interactive tools that a research dashboard can measure but can't build for you at ecommerce scale. If you're weighing other AI writing tools in the same breath as Semrush, our RunOctopus vs Jasper comparison and our RunOctopus vs Surfer SEO comparison cover two more common combinations, and our content marketing platforms breakdown looks at the wider field.
Semrush is a research and monitoring suite. Ollie is a content engine that plans, writes, links, and installs. If you want deep keyword data and rank tracking, Semrush is hard to beat at that specific job. If you want the actual content built and shipped without operating a suite of tools yourself, choose Ollie. Plenty of stores end up using both: Semrush to measure, Ollie to build.
