ChatGPT SEO Services: What a Service Can and Cannot Change

By ยท Updated ยท 9 min read

What people are buying when they buy ChatGPT SEO services

People want ChatGPT to recommend their business. A ChatGPT SEO service promises to help with that. The phrase covers a wide range, from a one-off audit to a monthly retainer, and from a careful measurement practice to a sales page with a screenshot.

The honest version of the job is narrower than the pitch. Nobody can instruct ChatGPT to name you. What a service can do is make your business easier for ChatGPT to find, understand and trust, and show you whether it worked. Everything else is either a means to that or a claim you should treat with caution.

This page sets out what changes, what does not and how to judge a proposal against that line. For the broader category, see our guide to the full range of AI search work, which covers all assistants, not only ChatGPT. For a step list you can try yourself, see how to get cited by ChatGPT.

One note on scope. ChatGPT is one assistant among several, and your buyers may be using others. A service that only watches ChatGPT can still be valuable, but it should say it is looking at one view of a larger picture.

What a service can really change

Four things sit within a service's reach. They are the parts worth paying for.

Whether ChatGPT can read your site

OpenAI publishes the names of the crawlers it uses, and site owners can allow or block them through a robots.txt file. A surprising number of sites block them by accident, through old settings or security layers. A service can check this in an afternoon and fix it. Our entry on GPTBot explains the basics.

Whether your pages answer clearly

If someone asks a question and your page has the answer in a plain sentence near the top, ChatGPT has something to use. If the answer is buried or vague, it does not. Rewriting pages this way is real work with a real effect on whether you are usable.

Whether outside sources describe you accurately

ChatGPT's answers often draw on third-party material about a business. Correcting a wrong listing, answering reviews and being present in the places your category is discussed can change what it finds.

Whether you can see what happens

A service can set up proper measurement, a fixed list of questions run repeatedly with answers saved. That is the one thing that turns a hunch into evidence.

What a service can change and what nobody controls Two panels contrasting what can be changed with what cannot. A service can change Whether crawlers can read your site Whether your pages answer clearly Whether outside listings are accurate Whether you can measure answers Nobody controls Which businesses ChatGPT names Whether the same answer repeats When ChatGPT changes its method Whether a mention becomes a sale
Every honest proposal fits inside the first panel and says so about the second.

What no service can change

Four things sit outside everyone's control, and any proposal that implies otherwise is overselling.

The choice itself. ChatGPT decides which businesses to name. There is no setting, no submission form and no payment that puts you on its list. Anyone who claims to have a direct line is not being straight.

Repeatability. Ask the same question twice and you may get two different lists. A business named today might be missing tomorrow for reasons unrelated to anything you did. That is why measurement needs repeated runs.

The assistant's method. OpenAI changes how its products work. A tactic that helped last quarter may matter less this quarter. Good services monitor continuously for this reason.

The step from mention to sale. A person who hears your name from ChatGPT often searches for you later or visits directly, so the trail rarely shows up in analytics. Be careful of reports that attribute revenue to ChatGPT with precision.

Our page on why your brand is not in ChatGPT goes through the usual reasons, which are mostly ordinary and fixable.

Why a guarantee is the clearest warning sign

If a proposal contains the words "guaranteed" and "ChatGPT" in the same sentence, stop reading.

Think about what would have to be true. The service would need to control which businesses ChatGPT names, and it does not. Or it would need to define "mentioned" so loosely that the promise is easy to meet, such as appearing once in one answer on one day.

Some providers offer a guarantee in the form of "or your money back." That is more reasonable if the terms are clear and the measure is something you can check. Read how success is defined, over what period, on which questions and by whose measurement. A refund promise tied to a vague target is a marketing line.

A more useful promise sounds like this: "We will measure your baseline, do this specific work and report the same measurement each month, with the full answers." That is a promise about what the service does, not about what ChatGPT does, and it is one the service can keep. See our list of AI SEO agency red flags for more.

Questions that separate a real service from a pitch

Five questions fit this topic in particular.

Which ChatGPT features does your work cover? ChatGPT can answer from what it learned in training and it can search the web and cite pages. A service should know which kind of answer matters for your questions and explain the difference in plain words.

How do you handle the fact that answers vary? You want to hear about repeated runs, not a single check.

Which questions will you measure and who writes the list? It should be agreed with you and kept fixed.

What will you do outside my own website? A proposal with nothing here has left out the part that often decides who gets named.

What will I own if I stop? The pages, the question list and the history of measurements should be yours.

If you want more, our page of questions to ask an AI SEO agency has twelve, with what good and bad answers sound like.

How to check ChatGPT yourself before you pay

You can learn a lot about your position in an afternoon, for free.

Write down twenty questions a customer might ask before choosing a business like yours. Use their words, with their situation in the question. Open a fresh conversation for each and ask it. If you are logged in, remember that ChatGPT may adapt to your history, so also try with a logged-out window or a colleague's account.

For each answer, copy the full text into a spreadsheet. Note whether you were named, who else was named, and how you were described. If it cites sources, note which.

Repeat each question two or three times on different days. Notice how much the answers change. That variation is the reason a single check is weak.

Then look at the pattern. Which questions name competitors and not you? Which name no one useful? Which get a fact wrong about you? Those are the places a service should aim, and you now have a list to compare against any proposal. If you want to track ChatGPT over time without a full platform, see ChatGPT brand monitoring.

What timelines are honest

Different parts of the work move at different speeds, and a service should say which is which.

Fixing crawler access is immediate once done, though ChatGPT needs to visit again before it reflects the change. Rewriting a page can show up in answers within weeks when ChatGPT fetches pages live. Changes to what it learned in training are slower and cannot be forced.

Outside sources take longest. A corrected listing or a new review takes time to be seen and weighed.

So an honest service will describe month one as foundation, month two to three as early movement in some questions and later months as the point where depth begins to count. If a service promises visible change everywhere in thirty days, it is describing its fastest task as if it were all of them.

Be ready for flat stretches. Some questions will not move at all, and some will move backwards for reasons nobody can see. A report that shows only gains is curated.

Types of ChatGPT SEO service you will meet

You will see four kinds, and it helps to know which one is in front of you.

Audit only. A one-time review with a report. Fine if you can act on the findings. Useless if you cannot.

Monitoring. A tool or person that runs your questions on a schedule. Valuable as measurement, though it will not change anything by itself.

Content production. Pages written and published for you. This is where most of the effect comes from, provided the pages answer real buyer questions and are accurate.

Full service. Measurement, access fixes, content and outside work together. The costliest, and the only one that covers the whole job.

Match the type to what you lack. If you have writers but no data, buy monitoring. If you have data but no writers, buy production. If you have neither, look at full service.

When ChatGPT gets a fact about you wrong

One of the most useful things a service can do has nothing to do with being named. It can find where ChatGPT states something false about your business and trace why.

Typical examples are an old address, a discontinued product, a wrong price range, a service you do not offer or a policy you changed. The cause is usually a stale source: an old directory entry, a review that mentions a past policy or an outdated page on your own site that was never removed.

The fix is rarely a message to ChatGPT. It is correcting the sources. Update your own pages first, since they are the ones you control. Then fix the listings and profiles that repeat the old fact, and add a clear, dated statement of the right fact where people and crawlers will see it.

Ask any service how it finds and fixes wrong facts. A good one has a routine for it, and can show a past example with the source it traced. A weak one has never looked, because it only checks whether you were named.

What to watch for after you sign

The first month tells you whether the service is what it said it was.

You should receive the baseline early, with full answer text. You should be asked to approve or add to the question list. You should hear about crawler access in the first week, with a clear statement of what was found and fixed.

You should not receive a long strategy deck and nothing measurable until month three. You should not be told that results will appear soon without any way to check. And you should not find that the question list quietly changed.

It also helps to agree on a rhythm. A short monthly call to read answers together is worth more than a long quarterly presentation, because it lets you spot a wrong fact or a missing question while there is still time to act. Come to it with one thing you noticed yourself, such as an answer a customer quoted back to you. Real customer experience is the best check on whether the measurement reflects the world.

Keep a copy of every report. If the service later changes its method or reporting format, you will want the originals to compare against. Treat that history as the asset it is.

How RunOctopus handles this

RunOctopus does not guarantee a ChatGPT mention, and no service can. It does the work that is within reach. Its AI, Ollie, researches your business, then writes and publishes pages directly on your own website, with a team planning, writing and reviewing alongside it. It works with Shopify, WordPress, WooCommerce and Wix.

You install nothing, approve nothing, upload nothing and schedule nothing. In the first week you get 8 long-form articles, 6 pages and a custom interactive tool for your niche. After that, 175+ pieces of content a month.

It reports on where ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini name your business. The 90-day promise is more visibility on Google and in AI answers, measured against the 90 days before you joined, or every dollar back.

Sterman, a real estate business in Los Angeles, went from 44 to 210 Google clicks a month since April (Google Search Console, 28 days to September 29, 2026).

Paste your address for the free site read to see what Ollie would do. No account, no call.

The short version

A good ChatGPT SEO service changes what you can control, measures honestly and says plainly what it cannot control. Hold every proposal to that.

Bottom line

No service can make ChatGPT name you. A good one makes you easier to find and trust, measures the result repeatedly and refuses to guarantee the part nobody controls.

Frequently asked questions

What do ChatGPT SEO services do?

They make your business easier for ChatGPT to find, understand and trust. That means checking crawler access, rewriting pages so they answer questions clearly, correcting outside listings and measuring answers over time.

Can a service guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No. ChatGPT decides what to name, and the same question can produce different answers on different runs. A guarantee of being named is a reason to walk away.

How long until ChatGPT reflects changes?

It depends. Page changes can show within weeks when ChatGPT fetches pages live. Changes that depend on what it learned in training are slower and cannot be forced. Outside listings take longest.

Can I check how ChatGPT answers about my business myself?

Yes. Write twenty buyer questions, ask each in a fresh conversation, save the full answers in a spreadsheet and repeat on different days. It takes an afternoon and shows where you stand.

Is ChatGPT enough to watch?

Usually not. Your buyers may use Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI answers too. A service that only watches ChatGPT gives one view of a bigger picture.
