AEO vs SEO vs GEO — what's the difference?

SEO gets your pages ranked in Google. AEO gets your content picked as the direct answer. GEO gets your store pulled into AI-generated recommendations. They're three layers of the same job, not three things to choose between — and the same quality work feeds all three.

Short version: SEO gets your pages ranked in Google, AEO gets your content chosen as the direct answer, and GEO gets your store pulled into an AI's generated recommendation. They sound like three competing strategies you have to pick between. They're not. They're three layers of the same job, and the work that serves one mostly serves all three — so the right answer to "which should I do?" is usually "you're already doing them together."

Here's each one in plain terms.

SEO — get ranked

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the classic one: making your pages the kind Google wants to show high in its list of blue links. It's about relevance, quality, and being technically reachable, so that when someone searches, you're near the top. This is still the foundation — it doesn't go away.

AEO — get chosen as the answer

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is about being picked as the answer, not just one of ten links — the featured snippet at the top of Google, the reply a voice assistant reads out, the sentence an AI quotes. It rewards content that answers a specific question directly and cleanly, near the top of the page.

GEO — get pulled into the AI's recommendation

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the newest layer: being one of the two or three brands an AI names when it writes an answer for a shopper in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews. This one matters more every month, because a growing slice of shoppers now ask an AI for a recommendation instead of scrolling a results page.

Why you don't have to choose

The reason these stack instead of compete is that they share a foundation. Clear answers to real questions, clean structure, schema markup, real trust signals, and pages that crawlers can actually reach — those same few things make you rank in Google (SEO), get chosen as the answer (AEO), and get quoted by an AI (GEO). There is no version of doing this well that helps one and hurts another.

So when people ask me "should I focus on SEO or GEO?", the honest answer is: focus on making genuinely good, well-structured, reachable content — and you win all three at once. That's exactly what I build for you across Discoverability, Schema Audit, and everything in the content engine. You get the whole stack, not a bet on one layer.
